Parametric design is a contemporary design approach based on using algorithms with parameters and rules. With these, relationships between elements are more easily controlled and manipulated, contrary to the conventional process with directly set relations. Moreover, the parametric design allows better management of a large number of elements – faster changes above all. The results of parametric design with a large number of elements are often impossible to be replicated with the conventional approach.
There are two main types of parametric modeling:
– Systems without predefined constraints starting from known and going to unknown
– Constraint systems where design represents their solution
The first type is used for design in a literal sense: experimenting with shapes and exploring possibilities, with unknown final solution. On the other hand, the second method is often used for energy or construction optimizations. Here, the solution is fitting into a set of constraints, so it is not so unknown. Solutions of the first system of work can be additionally evaluated through simulations and compared one with another considering different properties (use of material, the complexity of assembling, cost, etc).
Go Parametric is a blog dedicated to the popularization of parametric design and helping people to better understand and utilize it. The posts and projects published here are intended to explore new possibilities and move design toward the innovative approaches. This idea spans through all stages of design, for example:
– Algorithmic volume modeling
– Parametric facade and interior design
– Analysis and optimization of the design (structural, energy, etc.)
– Preparing files for the fabrication of elements.
Also, many other aspects of project production can be updated: made faster and more fluent and Go Parametric is working on discovering and application of these improvements.
New ideas and concepts, ways to improve the design process, optimization, and new design possibilities – all can be found here. However, since the final value of the design is determined by the user, please feel free to read, share, like and before all get in touch and send direct feedback. It would be highly appreciated and help to understand how can parametric design help even more!
